Xihuacán Tour
Ruinas de Xihuacán
Discover the archaeological ruins of Xihuacan, a recently excavated ceremonial center, on this tour from Ixtapa or Zihuatanejo. Visit the main sights of the area and the on-site museum, and learn about the ceremonial center built with bricks and modeling clay during the pre-Columbian era.
Among the objects on display in the museum, a stone carved with the toponymous glyph of Xihuacan, which gives its name to the site, stands out. It measures one meter high by 50 centimeters wide and 25 centimeters thick, and was found during the recent excavations in the area of the Ball Game.
The glyph is circular and reveals the name by which this place was known in pre-Hispanic times. Xihuacan is a word of Nahuatl origin that means "place of the possessors of turquoise", and that makes reference to a metaphor to denominate those "who possess the time" or "who control the calendar".
